USO-style dance to benefit Fort Devens Museum and commemorate the 80th anniversary of V-E Day
Join the Fort Devens Museum on Saturday May 10th from 6-10 PM for a USO-style dance! Honor our Veterans of “The Greatest Generation” and celebrate the Allied Victory in World War II. This 1940s-themed dance, held in the historic War Memorial Building in Shirley, will feature live music, refreshments, and a cash bar. “The Sudbury Fight” On Saturday April 20th at 1:00 PM, the Fort Devens Museum welcomes Mark Nichipor to present a program on The Sudbury Fight, a battle of King Philip’s War. On April 21, 1676 over five hundred Wampanoag, Nipmuc, and Narragansett warriors attacked the frontier settlements of Sudbury (today Sudbury and Wayland) in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. 80 Years After the Devastation of Cocoanut Grove
On November 28, 1942, the Cocoanut Grove nightclub in Boston burned and claimed the lives of almost 500 people. The December 2 issue of the "Fort Devens Digest" reports that the dead included 17 Army men, 26 Navy men, three Marines, and two WAVES. Two enlisted men from Fort Devens perished in the fire as well as the 19 year old daughter of the Post Dental Chief.
