May is National Mental Health Awareness Month

Did you know that:

  • Mental illnesses are among the most common health conditions in the United States. More than 50% will be diagnosed with a mental illness or disorder at some point in their lifetime. 1 in 5 Americans will experience a mental illness in a given year. (CDC.gov)

  • Since Covid there has been a reported increase in anxiety by 50% and depression by 44%. (Boston College report)

  • Even before the pandemic, anxiety and depression were becoming more common among children and adolescents, increasing 27 percent and 24 percent respectively from 2016 to 2019. By 2020, 5.6 million kids (9.2%) had been diagnosed with anxiety problems and 2.4 million (4.0%) had been diagnosed with depression (Georgetown University)

  • Research has proven that exercise improves mental health by reducing anxiety, depression, and negative mood and by improving self-esteem and cognitive function. (nih.gov)

This is a serious topic that is not discussed enough! As someone who has been involved in a family with a history of mental illness, I KNOW this topic can't be taken lightly. I also know how Pilates and movement can have a SIGNIFICANT impact on our mental well-being!

In becoming a Power Pilates Teacher Trainer I was required to write a research paper. My topic: "Depression & Anxiety and How Pilates Can Improve It."
Read here for a condensed version of my research paper.

I personally know the impact that movement can make on the emotional and physiological well-being of others. I challenge you to try to get someone active that you know might be feeling down or stressed out. Here are some ideas:

  • Ask a friend to go for a walk
  • Ask someone to take your dog for a walk (many people are willing to help others more than they will help themselves)
  • Ask for help cleaning out your garden, garage, storage area...
  • Invite a friend to check out Farandnear in Shirley
  • Take a friend to the Tower Hill Botanical Garden

You get the idea. Any simple way you can create a little movement for someone will help them out more than you may ever realize.
