Emerson Health launches $60 million fundraising campaign for new Emergency Department

New Members

Emerson Health announced the launch of a $60 million fundraising campaign, the most significant philanthropic opportunity in the organization’s nearly 115-year history. The campaign — Transforming Health — includes construction of a state-of-the-art Emergency Department (ED) and comprehensive upgrades on the health system’s main campus in Concord.

The Transforming Health Campaign (Transforming Health, Campaign) is focused on expanding access to emergency care throughout the region. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, Emerson has experienced a steady rise in emergency room visits, including a nearly 10% increase in patients between fiscal year-to-date 2024 and 2025. The increase was in part due to the recent closure of Nashoba Valley Medical Center. Building a new emergency department will provide the space and resources needed to care for an expanding and aging community.

The centerpiece of Transforming Health is the construction of a new 18,000-square-foot Emergency Department, double the size of the existing one. The new ED will be located at the front of the main campus, and the design will improve the overall experience for patients, staff, and visitors.

Key features of the new Emergency Department include:

  • Enhanced care for all patients, with single rooms and additional treatment space to accommodate patients, visitors, staff, and equipment
  • The latest imaging and radiology services adjacent to the new ED
  • A dedicated behavioral health unit within the ED optimizing patient care, privacy, and safety
  • Faster, more streamlined access for patients and emergency vehicles with dedicated, easily-accessible entrances.

The Campaign will also support the expansion of outpatient clinical spaces to better accommodate patients and visitors.

“Building a new, state-of-the-art Emergency Department is not just an investment in our facilities, it is an investment in the lives and well-being of every person who comes through our doors,” said Christine Schuster, RN, MBA, president and CEO of Emerson Health. “The Transforming Health Campaign allows us to modernize and expand access to advanced healthcare to meet the growing needs of our region with the highest standards of safety, compassion, and care. These improvements will ensure that we are fully prepared to provide critical, lifesaving treatment and a healing environment for all who rely on us for generations to come.”

The project will be fully funded with philanthropic investments. Emerson Health invites community members, philanthropists, and stakeholders to learn more and contribute to the Transforming Health Campaign, elevating the standard of healthcare in the region.
