The Town of Acton is seeking an enthusiastic, mission-driven Outreach Specialist to lead community engagement efforts that expand access to energy efficiency programs and improve Town-wide communication. This dual-purpose role is ideal for someone passionate about sustainability, equity, and effective public engagement.
General Duties and Responsibilities: The primary focus of this position is to serve as Acton's Energy Advocate under the Mass Save Community First Partnership (CFP). The Outreach Specialist will build connections with Acton’s residents and small businesses—particularly with underrepresented and underserved communities—to increase awareness of and participation in energy-saving programs that reduce utility costs and support a clean energy future. Through active engagement, partnership-building, and tailored outreach, the Outreach Specialist will support residents and businesses in accessing relevant services and incentives.
In addition to energy outreach, the secondary focus of this position is to enhance the Town’s overall communication with the public. The Outreach Specialist will support the development of clear, inclusive, and accessible communication strategies to promote local government programs, events, and updates. This includes assisting in the coordination of public messaging across digital platforms, printed materials, and community events. May have to work on occasion on the evenings or the weekend.
Minimum Entrance Requirements: One1 (1) to three (3) years of experience in community outreach, public engagement, and public communication. Experience working with diverse populations across language, socio-economic, or cultural backgrounds and engaging populations served by CFP programs. Strong verbal and written communication skills, skills in building partnerships and aligning efforts toward shared goals. Organized, proactive, and able to manage time across multiple projects and priorities. Comfortable public speaking and community facing-work. Strong interpersonal and customer service skills and proficiency with data entry and tracking in spreadsheets or similar tools.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience with CRM systems like Salesforce. Familiarity with energy efficiency or sustainable initiatives. Experience leading or supporting interns or volunteers. Proven ability to inspire action or foster collaboration. Graphic design or content creation skills are a plus (e.g. Canva, Adobe, social media tools). Fluency or conversant in Mandarin or Portuguese is also a plus.
Pay Rate: $66,542 -$74,894 on qualifications. This is a grant funded position through Spring 2028.
Benefits: Hybrid or Flex work schedule is available and up to a $425 fitness club reimbursement program (if enrolled in Town Health Insurance plan). Health, Dental, Vision, and an attractive pension system are just some of our competitive insurance and benefits. The Town pays 75% of the Health Insurance cost.
