Position Summary:
The Physical Therapist assesses, plans, organizes, and participates in rehabilitative programs that improve mobility, relieve pain, increase strength, and decrease or prevent deformity of patients suffering from disease or injury.
Major Responsibilities:
- Reviews physician's referral and patient's medical records to help determine diagnosis and physical therapy treatment required.
- Performs and documents an initial exam, evaluating data to identify problems and determine a diagnosis prior to intervention.
- Plans, prepares and carries out individually designed programs of physical treatment to maintain, improve or restore physical functioning, alleviate pain and prevent physical dysfunction in patients.
- Records prognosis, treatment, response, and progress in patient's chart or enters information into computer.
- Identifies and documents goals, anticipated progress and plans for reevaluation.
- Administers manual exercises, traction or electrotherapeutic modalities to help relieve pain, increase patient strength, or decrease or prevent deformity or crippling.
- Evaluates effects of treatment at various stages and adjusts treatments to achieve maximum benefit.
- Tests and measures patient's strength, motor development and function, sensory perception, functional capacity, and respiratory and circulatory efficiency and records data.
- Instructs patient and family in treatment procedures to be continued at home.
- Confers with the patient, medical practitioners and appropriate others to plan, implement and assess the intervention program.
- Documents anticipated progress and plans for reevaluation/reassessment. Completes all records and documentation thoroughly, accurately, and promptly.
- Follows all departments and procedures.
- Meets established productivity standards.
- Facilitates and promotes the sharing of knowledge and content throughout departments.
- Takes responsibility for ensuring that all work outcomes satisfy the UMass Memorial Health System True North.

- Attends staff meetings and in-service programs as required or directed. Keeps current with hospital and unit changes by reading communication boards and/or books, bulletin boards, posted notices and reads and responds to e mails on a regular basis.
- Practices cost containment and fiscal responsibility through the efficient use of supplies, equipment, time, etc.
- Complies with established departmental policies, procedures and objectives.
- Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.
- Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
- Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
- Respects diverse views and approaches, and contributes to maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.
- Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

Position Qualifications:
- Ability to monitor and assess performance of patient and plan make improvements or take corrective action as indicated.
- Ability to communicate with patients, care givers, coworkers, supervisors and other medical staff professionally.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from patients, caregivers, managers and other staff.
- Ability to follow policies and procedures.
- Ability to teach patients or caregivers how to perform exercises or tasks.
- Ability to speak, read and write fluently in English.
- Ability to act professionally at all times.
- Must be self-directed and able to use appropriate clinical judgment.
- In depth knowledge of standards of practice within the profession.
- Successful completion of a physical therapy program at a school of physical therapy approved by the American Physical Therapy Association or the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals of American Medical Association or the committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation of the American Medical Association.
- A minimum of one year (1) of physical therapy experience desired.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, ETC:
- Current and unencumbered Massachusetts state license to practice physical therapy. Current CPR certification.
- Unless certification, license or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
- Department-specific competencies, including age-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
