The Town of Townsend, MA, Population 9004 (2023 census), seeks a principled leader with hands-on experience in municipal government to serve as Town Administrator. Located in the northwest outreaches of Middlesex District, Townsend prides itself on its natural resources, historic charm, and community spirit. The Town Administrator works in collaboration with a three-member Select Board, a seven-member Finance Committee, and the North Middlesex Regional School District. The total operating budget of Townsend is approximately $30 million. As the chief administrative officer, you will oversee daily operations, coordinating between multiple municipal departments working within a fiscally responsible budget. A successful candidate will exhibit skills that enable daily coordination among the Selectboard, community, and staff to ensure effective administration as the bridge between policy and action. With this must come a commitment to transparency, the ability to explain complex municipal issues to a diverse audience, finding creative solutions to unique challenges, while creating a trusting atmosphere. Recommended Minimum Qualifications:  Bachelor’s degree in political science, public or business administration, or a related field; Master’s preferred. Five to seven (5-7) years of progressively responsible experience in municipal management or comparable executive leadership or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Massachusetts Certified Public Purchasing Official (MCPPO) Designation, or the ability to obtain such within one year of employment.
