The Town of Townsend has a vacancy for the part-time position of Animal Inspector. The position is nominated by the Board of Selectmen and appointed by the State for a one year term, which can be renewed annually. The Animal Inspector reports to the Board of Health and operates under the authority in MGL Chapter 129. WAGE: $607.00 annually GRADE: N/A HOURS: As needed. AVAILABLE: Immediate opening Duties: Issue quarantines in all animal bite cases, using official quarantine forms issued by the Bureau of Animal Health. (State required); make an annual domestic animal survey using the "Barn Book" issued by the Bureau of Animal Health. (State required); check any cattle, which are imported from another state or country after being notified to do so by the Bureau of Animal Health. (State required); make an annual inspection of all permitted barns and stables; capture rabid/suspected rabid animals in the event of a bite or other exposure to humans or domestic animals. Transport to designated facility for specimen preparation (currently Townsend Vet Hospital) per Board of Health rabies protocol; be available by pager for prompt response to rabies calls; report activities to the Board of Health on a regular basis; perform other duties as mutually agreed upon by the Board and Animal Inspector. Qualifications: A municipal animal inspector should be reasonably experienced in the care and handling of domestic livestock animals. There is no scholastic, professional (ie: Veterinarians) or farm experience requirements for the position of Animal Inspector. A generalized knowledge of domestic animals will prove very useful. Experience with wildlife will prove beneficial. Familiarity with domestic animal import requirements and understanding of local ordinances (sanitary codes, zoning laws, etc.).
