Lawrence Academy (LA) is a boarding and day school in Groton, MA, serving 400 students in grades 9-12. LA enjoys its heritage as one of the oldest independent schools in the country while embracing a contemporary student-centered approach that supports its mission. In LA’s tightly knit environment, students are supported and encouraged to exercise their minds, discover their voices, learn creatively, and take their own initiative. The academic program is uniquely hands on and allows students to discover how their education can be applied in daily life. Lawrence Academy seeks an energetic and experienced Head Varsity Softball Coach. The Head Varsity Softball Coach serves as a dynamic and highly motivated leader of the Varsity Softball Program. Lawrence Academy competes in the Independent School League (ISL), playing one of the most challenging high school schedules in New England. This position requires an undergraduate college degree as well as significant and relevant softball coaching experience. Ideal coaching candidates must have experience coaching at the high school, club, and/or college level as well as experience playing at the collegiate and/or high school level. Qualified candidates should have weekday afternoon availability during the softball season, which runs from approximately mid-March through late May, approximately three hours daily with flexibility on Wednesdays and Saturdays from early to late afternoon for games, as well as some evenings depending on the game schedule. This is a stipend-paid, part-time, non-benefits-eligible position reporting to the Director of Athletics.
Responsibilities:
• Serve as the Head Varsity Coach for the Softball Program.
• Set goals for the softball program and monitor progress in collaboration with the Athletic Department.
• Work with Admissions Office throughout the year to identify and recruit mission-appropriate student athletes.
• Develop, plan, coordinate, and execute daily practices and training.
• Instruct and demonstrate skill sets, both technical and tactical, necessary for individual and team development and achievement. Instruct players on fundamental and advanced softball techniques and ingame strategies.
• Promote the values of sportsmanship and leadership within the program.
• Effectively communicate and collaborate with assistant coaches, families, student-athletes, and the athletic department.
• Assist players who are interested in the college recruiting process.
• Proactively seek out and participate in continuous professional growth.
• Foster a positive team environment aligned with Lawrence Academy's mission.
Required Qualifications:
• Undergraduate college degree as well as significant and relevant softball coaching experience.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective and appropriate relationships with adolescents.
• Able to traverse the school campus, participate in athletic activities, and work in a variety of weather conditions.
• Ability to lift 20 pounds.
• Enthusiasm for working in an independent school setting and desire to embrace the school’s mission and values.
• Candidate must successfully pass background checks.
• First aid and CPR training required.
Season Stipend: $10,000-$12,000 The stipend range listed represents the typical pay range for this role; however, actual compensation may vary based on factors such as the candidate’s skills, experience, education, and market conditions.
