The Shirley Historical Society will sponsor a self-guided tour of some historic Shirley houses on Saturday April 29th from 1:00 – 5:00 pm. Tickets to this fundraiser are $25 if bought in advance and $30 if bought on the day of the open houses. Tickets are available at Hazen Library during regular open hours and at the Shirley Historical Society Museum on Mondays and Saturdays from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm.
Among the places to visit will be the 19th century “mansion” of the richest man in town and the small cottage built by a father-in-law who wanted to be close to his grandson. Tour members will be able to visit the home of Shirley’s most famous inventor - Earl Tupper, and most famous naturalist - Benton MacKaye. The most carefully restored building is a late 18th century Shaker cottage that was moved three times to reach its current location. The most unique restoration is the building that started as a schoolhouse and now is a family home. A total of nine, mostly 19th century houses around Shirley will be open and can be viewed in any order, any time during the afternoon.
Tickets may be ordered by mail with payment sent to Shirley Historical Society, PO Box 217, Shirley, MA -01464. For further information, phone 978-425-9328 or email mail@shirleyhistory.org.
