Free Gospel Concert to Celebrate MLK, Jr. Day Sunday, January 19, 4:00 PM Lawrence Academy Performing Arts Center (refreshments will be served) Presented by the Groton DEI, Lawrence Academy and the Groton Commissioners of Trust Funds
Suzanne Buell and the Gospel Connection will take you through traditional spirituals and stirring gospel music. Not only does Suzanne explore the roots of the traditional spiritual and historic gospel that defined the Civil Rights movement, but also the musical connections that inspire contemporary artists. This music helped define a time when Martin Luther King championed the march on Washington, and was used by the Freedom Riders to inspire the civil resistance movement, and by Fannie Lou Hamer, to promote free and fair voting rights in Mississippi. The 6-piece band includes David Hunte on keyboard and vocals, Phil Antoniades on drums and percussion, Mike Payette on bass and vocals, Chris Leadbetter on guitar, mandolin and vocals, Vicki Zelski on vocals, and band leader Buell on lead vocals. You’ll be moved to dance and sing along to music by Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Mavis Staples, Aretha Franklin, Ruthie Foster, Mike Farris, Sam Cooke, Levon Helm, and so many more. This concert is free, thanks to a grant from the Groton Commissioners of Trust Funds. We ask that you consider a donation to the Groton Community Children’s Fund
