Position Summary:
Responsible for providing therapeutic riding/horsemanship and animal assisted interventions to children and adults with special needs, mental health challenges and trauma history.  Additional services include working with individuals seeking instruction in recreational riding. Instruction may include un-mounted and mounted activities. Instructors are also required to assist with the training and conditioning of the equines and small animals.
  • Provides instruction according to the Massachusetts Riding Instructor License Requirements, Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International, and Best Practices for Horsemanship Safety based on Certified Horsemanship Association Guidelines.
  • Provides direct instruction to children and adults from the Perkins Residential Program, Perkins School, Perkins Adult Services and the Community who are enrolled in Therapeutic Horsemanship/Animal Assisted Therapy Program.
  • Implements and teaches therapeutic programs including but not limited to Equine Education, Job Skills Training and Animal Assisted Therapy/Activity Programs.
  • Incorporates interactive activities into lessons as necessary to meet the individual needs of the participant.
  • Responsible for lesson preparation, insuring that the horse is properly prepared, is in good health and capable of participating in the lesson, that the riding equipment is in good repair, and that the physical environment is safe, clean, and free of any hazards.
  • 8 years horsemanship experience providing riding and horsemanship instruction
  • Comprehensive knowledge of horsemanship principles and practices
  • 3 years of experience working with children and adults with special needs, mental health challenges and trauma history
  • Strong communication, writing and organizational skills
  • Massachusetts Riding Instructor License
  • Certified PATH International Riding Instructor
  • Educational background in Human Services, Special Education or Psychology
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred in Human Services, Special Education, Psychology, or related field
  • Lifting may be required up to 50lbs
