In 1979 Derek Forbes joined Simple Minds. Originally a Lead Guitarist, he was reluctant to join as a bass player. But when his Les Paul was stolen after a show he joined Simple minds on bass and the rest is history.
Derek wrote and played on all Simple Minds albums from 1979 to 1985 (just after their hit “Don’t You, Forget About Me), again from 1995 to 1998, guested on the “Live” album, “Black & White” and wrote on the 1986 album “Once Upon a Time.” In 2016 he was awarded an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Song Collection, for his song writing with Simple Minds, among others.
While taking a break from Simple Minds, Forbes became the original ‘live’ bass player with Propaganda, becoming a full member in 1986, and playing on two albums over the next seven years. In 1994 he joined Kirk Brandon’s 10:51, and in later years, Spear of Destiny, The Alarm and Big Country.
In 2016 Derek recorded an acoustic solo album of Simple Minds favorites, with new Big Country singer Simon Hough. But Simon could not make the Studio, due to some ‘Live’ work, so Forbes played the whole album alone. It quickly moved from acoustic to electric, and the album ‘Echoes’ was born.
Forbes later joined up with Anni Hogan from Marc and the Mambas fame (Marc Almond), to form the duo known asZANTi. Their album ‘Broken Hearted City’ was released in late April.
Derek has toured the U.S. and Europe many time doing solo and full band shows. The Derek Forbes band touring America in 2018 is: Derek Forbes (bass & vocals), JD Malone (vocals), John McNutt (guitar), Mark Iezzi (drums) andTim McKinst (keys).
