Meet Our Musicians hosted by Maestro Bruce Hangen June 30, 2021 Mark Emery, Assistant Principal Trumpet Red Chair Sponsors: Bobbie and David Spiegelman
A Note from Bruce Hangen, Artistic Director & Conductor, Orchestra of Indian Hill
Hello, everyone! Bruce Hangen, here. I'm pleased to share this interview time with trumpeter Mark Emery. Mark has been with us for many years. He certainly is a performer, but even more so, a thinking musician. He and I have had conversations over the years in matters covering everything from the future of orchestras and orchestra-playing to programming and specific playing conditions. Even more so, in his contracted position as our Second Trumpet alongside Principal Trumpeter Mary-Lynne Bohn, Mark is ever-ready to move up to the Principal chair whenever Mary-Lynne has a schedule conflict, sometimes at short notice.
I love having Mark in the orchestra as he's one of those musicians always maintaining eye contact, always acknowledging (usually with a smile, sometimes but rarely with a quizzical eye) any comments I may make from the podium in rehearsal. I'm sure all his other professional experiences have brought him to that high level of professionalism.
So, here's another interview with a musician who ordinarily doesn't get much of a public profile, but who is so important to the overall mix of brass, woodwind, percussion, and string players that we call the Orchestra of Indian Hill. You'll also be treated to him performing some excerpts from that standard showpiece of all showpieces, the "Carnival of Venice," originally composed by none other than Niccolo Paganini for the violin!
