Judith Warner - We've Got Issues: Children and Parents in the Age of Medication
Author, Judith Warner, wrote We've Got Issues: Children and Parents in the Age of Medication, a book that takes a hard look at the face of mental health stigma in our time and describes how common myths and misperceptions about children with mental illness and their parents can keep kids from getting the help that they need. In this presentation, aimed at parents and professionals alike, she will describe her own journey toward greater understanding, explore the biases and fears that parents often bring to encounters with mental health practitioners, offer insights into media representations of mental illness and mental health care, and explore the role of anti-psychiatry in our culture and media. Judy's presentation allows opportunity for audience comments and questions.
Judith Warner is the author of eight non-fiction books, including the New York Times bestsellers, Perfect Madness: Motherhood in the Age of Anxiety. Her most recent book, We've Got Issues: Children and Parents in the Age of Medication won media awards from The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the National Alliance on Mental Illness, as well as a Changing Lives Award from the Parent/Professional Advocacy League. In 2012, Judy was also the recipient of a Rosalynn Carter Fellowship for Mental Health Journalism. She is currently a Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress, where she specializes in women's leadership and work-family policy, and is a contributing writer for The New York Times Magazine.
