\n Slavyanka Russian Chorus will present a special program of "\;Russian Liturgical Music from the 17th \;to the 20th century"\; - three centuries of sacred choral music from a thousand year old spiritual tradition\, including 17th century chants\, and compositions by Berezovsky\, Bortniansky\, Tchaikovsky\, Rachmaninoff\, Chesnokov\, and Kedrov. \;

\n Much of this repertoire is still unknown in the West\, and listeners will come away with a deeper appreciation for the enormous breadth of Russian musical history. In listening to the earliest music of Russian Baroque\, one can still hear echoes of the old preceding medieval tradition\, with its ancient roots in the Byzantine church. As Russia under Peter the Great began to change and make connections with the wider world\, a whole new experimental period began\, incorporating new musical ideas and Western influences into the compositions of Bortniansky and others. These developments in turn laid the foundations for the much better known Russian composers of the late 19th \;century (Tchaikovsky\, Glinka and others) and for the 20th century composers (Rachmaninoff\, Chesnokov) who worked to rediscover the chants of Russia'\;s ancient traditions\, and bring to them the freshness of 20th century musical ideas.
